About

LayerSpec is an engineering consultancy. We design fibre networks, EV charging sites, and the geospatial data pipelines that sit behind both. We also write about the work.

Why this exists

Most infrastructure engineering content online is either vendor marketing or forum threads. There's not much in between — no one's publishing the kind of practical, mid-level reference material that an engineer or project manager actually needs to orient themselves on a new topic.

The articles here try to fill that gap. HLD vs LLD. How a PON power budget is built. What a DNO actually asks for. Written to be useful before it's interesting.

How we work

Small core team. Offshore delivery capacity we've built up over years of running design functions at scale. Onshore review and QA on everything that leaves the building.

Engagements are scoped up-front, either fixed-price for defined deliverables or day-rate for work that runs alongside client teams. We don't do time-and-materials without a ceiling, and we don't take on work we can't deliver well.

Who we work with

Operators, altnets, contractors, and site hosts across the UK and US. Most engagements come via repeat clients or word-of-mouth. The website is here to make us findable by the minority who find us through a search engine.

The tools

The tools section publishes calculators we built for ourselves. PON power budgets first; more to come. They're free to use and don't track anything.
